Floodplain Management

The City of South Lake Tahoe adopted its Floodplain Management Ordinance in 2001 which is in Chapter 6.65 of the City Municipal Code. It provides direction for new and existing developments located within special flood hazard areas. The primary goal of this ordinance is to reduce future flood damage through the implementation of building techniques that minimize the potential loss of life and property due to development in floodplains. It references the more restrictive floodplain development standards found in the Regional Plan for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Lahontan Basin Plan.

The City, in cooperation with FEMA’s National Floodplain Insurance Program, has completed a re-study of the 1978 Floodplain Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and has been revised as April 3, 2012.
